CHARACTER
Character Name: Yusuke Kitagawa (codenamed "Fox")
Character Age: 16
Canon: Persona 5
Canon Point: 11/20, 20XX
History: http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Yusuke_Kitagawa#Profile
Personality: Yusuke is introduced as an eccentric who is obsessed with art above all else, an oddity with little concept of social norms or personal boundaries. When he's introduced, he appears to be stalking Ann -- only for it to be revealed that he was following her because he desperately wanted to paint her. He is fascinated by what he sees as beautiful, and to him, Ann is his ideal as a model. As a student to the renowned artist Ichiryusai Madarame, his goal is ultimately to capture pure beauty, much like what he sees in his mentor's masterpiece, a mysterious Japanese-style portrait entitled the "Sayuri".
On the surface, Yusuke appeared to venerate his instructor as an artistic genius, while Madarame himself appeared a strict but kindly mentor. In reality, Madarame was a fraud who saw art as nothing more than a means to make money. He adopted Yusuke at a young age and raised him as an artist, and when Yusuke proved talented, passed off Yusuke's work as his own to generate fame and profit. As for Yusuke himself, he lived in desperately impoverished conditions in an atelier that was little more than a shack. Madarame took on other pupils, who also became victims of plagiarism, and were described as being kept as art slaves, or even pets -- taught nothing, yet "treated inhumanely, as if disciplining a dog". If they defied him they would be thrown out of the atelier with no support, and their careers as artists would be destroyed by Madarame's influence. The effects of this were devastating: one pupil was driven to homelessness, another became an abuser himself to relieve the stress of his mistreatment, and a third was driven as far as suicide, to name only a few. Eventually, Yusuke was the only pupil remaining. Although he desperately wanted to leave, he was wholly dependent on his foster father for survival. He had no choice but to tolerate the abuse, even actively defending Madarame from any allegations made against him.
This changes when Yusuke is unwittingly dragged into Madarame's cognitive world. Yusuke is forced to confront Madarame's true nature, and discover the extent of his crimes. This included the truth behind the mysterious "Sayuri": it had been his dying mother's painting, intended to be a parting gift from mother to son to immortalise her love for him. Madarame had a hand in his mother's death, altered and mass-produced her work for profit, and took Yusuke in as an orphan to prevent him from learning the truth. Enraged, Yusuke loses any reason he had to forgive the person he had adored as a father. His spirit of rebellion awakens his Persona, Goemon, and he takes his place among the Phantom Thieves as "Fox". From then on, Yusuke vows never to avert his eyes from the truth again, and helps bring Madarame to justice. He becomes determined to fight other corrupt adults that would use their power for their own gain. In proving the justice of the Phantom Thieves, he believes this will give courage to others who still suffer as he did. Predictably, he also has other reasons for staying with the thieves: he believes exploring the Metaverse will broaden his horizons as an artist, and serve as a source of new inspiration.
In the dynamics of the group, Yusuke is thoughtful, level-headed, and often a voice of reason. He prefers to think things through rationally, and scolds others who endanger the group by acting on impulse (usually Ryuji). However, despite his vast intelligence he's not practically-minded, and tends to leave the finer points of plans to the others. Instead, he lends support by providing the art design for each calling card, and he forms a contract with the protagonist to be able to copy skill cards for him. His sharp observational skills help on more than one occasion, such as when he memorises the license plate of a car when Makoto is kidnapped so the team can chase her down and rescue her. What he sometimes lacks in common sense, he more than makes up for with his creativity and quick thinking.
It's implied that the Thieves are Yusuke's only real friends; he states no one talks to him in school and that he has always been treated differently by his peers, both before and after the Madarame scandal comes to light. He comes to form a close bond with Joker, which develops over the course of his confidant interactions. He sees the protagonist as someone he can trust deeply, describing him as his greatest supporter and admirer, a soothing presence, and someone who provides him with endless ideas. Ann is also someone he is fond of: while he initially places her on a pedestal as an idealised conception of beauty, he begins to realise she's just an ordinary teenager like the rest of them, and treats her as such. His relationship with Futaba is a bizarre one, the two often bickering, with Futaba giving him the nickname "Inari". Yusuke acts belligerent in turn, proving that despite his attempts to act elegant and refined, he can also be quite petty. Ultimately, however, their arguments are never too serious, and Yusuke was one of the first people Futaba was able to open up to and hold a normal conversation with after years of life as a recluse, suggesting a lot of their snarkiness at each other is just for show.
Yusuke is well aware of his reputation as being eccentric, and yet is sensitive about being labelled as such. He doesn't do much to avoid such an impression, though: he can be seen people-watching for hours on end, walking around public places mumbling to himself, or taking his friend to a church and asking him to strip. Yusuke is really, really interested in the naked human body. If he had a choice, he says he would walk around naked in the middle of summer, and he shows a repeated interest in painting multiple party members (both female and male) nude. Yet he never shows an interest in anyone in either a romantic or sexual sense, and even compares Ann's beauty to the beauty of a pair of lobsters, which he decided to buy at the beach because he found their shapes aesthetically pleasing. On another occasion, he attempts to paint what he thinks is a couple sharing a romantic moment... which actually turns out to be a brother and sister spending time together. Whether Yusuke is asexual or simply clueless of matters of the heart is debatable, but either way, a recurring theme is that he fails to understand complex emotions, which hinders his growth as an artist.
A running gag with Yusuke is that he lacks self-control when it comes to money. He often splurges money on his art, even prioritising it over essentials like maintaining his weapons and equipment, or even food. As a consequence he lives as a literal starving artist, skipping meals and walking to locations around Tokyo instead of taking the train in an attempt to save even the smallest amounts of money. Although it's played for laughs, it is very likely his self-neglect stems from the neglect shown to him by Madarame, and he has not yet learned to properly care for himself. He does enjoy food and drink, however, and will gorge himself if given the chance. Despite his money problems, he isn't stingy when it comes to others: in one instance, he spends all his money on sweets for Ann's family while going hungry himself. In another, he entrusts the "Sayuri" to Sojiro and the protagonist as a thank-you gift for taking care of him, and uniquely, Yusuke is the confidant who bestows the protagonist with the most gifts from hangout spots, able to give three in total (as opposed to one or two, as with every other confidant). To Yusuke, who has very little, it means a great deal to share what he does have with others.
Much of his confidant dwells on attempting to overcome the artists' block he develops after the shock of learning the truth about Madarame. While previously he had been innocent about the existence of evil in the world, he feels he has become tainted by the revelations about his mentor. He becomes troubled by his need to paint in order to maintain his scholarship and to compete for recognition, which he sees as worldly attachments that make him unable to produce pure art. This is worsened when he becomes aware of his disconnection to reality, lacking an ability to properly understand others and convey them authentically through his paintings. After his painting "Desire" is slated at an exhibition, he even wonders if he should give up on art altogether.
With the support of Joker and the other Thieves, he is able to overcome his struggles, and enters his latest work in a competition, but not for the sake of money or the recognition of winning. He realises that, like his mother's "Sayuri", he wants to produce meaningful art simply for the act of sharing it with others. The piece unveiled is "Desire and Hope", intended to depict the heart of humanity, a contradiction made up of both beauty and ugliness. He explains that the light of "Hope" is his friends and the bonds he shares with them. Yusuke wins the competition, finally overcomes his slump, and begins to come to terms with the contradictory relationship he shared with his mentor. He later bestows the painting on the protagonist as a farewell gift, showing the depths of his appreciation for their friendship.
Before the final confrontation, Yusuke realises that although the Phantom Thieves may always be outcasts who are rejected by society, their role is a necessary one. Much like with his art, Yusuke believes his role is to push at the boundaries of convention, even where it is unwanted. By painting over the distortions of society, he can uphold his own justice, and help create a better world.
Inventory: His katana, assault rifle, spare ammunition. A smartphone with a strange Nav app, a wallet (not that he ever has any money), and a keychain full of keys he always wears at his belt.
Whenever he's seen as a threat while acting as a Phantom Thief, Yusuke's clothes change into his "Fox" outfit, complete with kitsune mask and tail. The outfit serves as a symbol of his rebellious spirit, and hides his identity during infiltrations.
Abilities: Yusuke's Persona is Goemon (later Kamu Susano-o), an outlaw hero of Japanese folklore and manifestation of his own psyche that he can summon to help him fight in battle. Goemon excels in inflicting and resisting Ice damage, but is weak to Fire damage. He has the highest strength stat in the party, but the second least Magic, and the lowest Luck. His relatively low endurance for a physical Persona makes him more reliant on dodging and countering, as well as landing multiple rapid-fire attacks to score critical hits, or single blows that cause heavy amounts of damage.
Goemon's current skills are as follows:
Flaws: Whether this is a flaw or a positive trait is subjective, but Yusuke is an embodiment of the chaotic good alignment. This is informed by his distrustful view that adults cannot be relied on to uphold a fair and just society, and that the Phantom Thieves are in a unique position to enact their own justice.
In the past, he had a selfish, manipulative and vindictive streak, shown in the way he blackmailed Ann, and was complicit in covering up the extent of his mentor's abuse. He's socially awkward, often missing cues and disregarding norms others take for granted, which makes him appear rude, if not downright bizarre. He can be rather self-absorbed, often speaking with blunt honesty and showing a disregard for the feelings of others. He's perpetually bad with money.
An ongoing joke is that he's cursed, and drags storms and bad weather with him wherever he goes, even to the point that other characters comment on it. This is probably a nod to his second Persona, the Japanese god of storms.
