REAPSODY Week 5 - Kaiba (post-erasure)
[After the erasures, Yusuke leaves the church feeling numb. It was bittersweet, knowing the victims this week had gone to their deaths willingly, and all in order to save Akira...
He's clutching Mutsu's katana in his hand, tight. Wherever Kaiba is, he intends to go seek him out.]

Even as an incomplete work, it's truly beautiful... It has a clear vivacity that evokes the love and admiration of its creator.
[Yusuke didn't even know card game design could be as meaningful as other forms of art, too, but now he's convinced.]
no subject
[ plus, most people mentioning the 'love and admiration of its creator' are doing so in a decidedly negative manner, and he doesn't seem to hear any of that in Yusuke's voice. he moves a little closer, to check, maybe ]

[Speaking of not understanding, Yusuke just blinks at him when he moves closer..... hi Kaiba]
no subject
Ah, it's possible? We usually ask the userbase, and there aren't that many young duelists who know how to talk about that kind of thing. It doesn't come up very often, I guess.
[ He'd been trying to be discreet when he moved in, but maybe it was too discreet? Did it come off like he was trying to crowd him? Maybe his coat still smells like McDonalds? Yusuke blinks again and Kaiba realizes he's paying rapt attention and ]
Your eyelashes are very long.
[ shit was that out loud ]

[said as if Kaiba had just made an observation about the weather. Yusuke always notices small details like that in others, so it doesn't seem odd to him to have it pointed out about himself.]
Your eyes are very blue, much like your dragon's. [one flattering observation deserves another???]
no subject
[ An immediate grimace. What is even happening, was that a pun? Really? He panicked, hadn't wanted to be disingenuous when of course he knows exactly how close his eye color is to the hex codes, Pantone prints and paint color of his dragons' eyes, but his default sneer didn't seem right, either.
Still, that's no excuse for cheap wordplay, or for being an idiot just for collarbones and a smile. He had to pull himself together! He takes a good half step away and a cleansing breath ]
--I'm--sorry, that was uncalled for. No one deserves puns like that, least of all you.

[... Mostly he only purveys them to make Futaba suffer, because bullying her is funny, but hey. When Kaiba steps out of his space, though, he feels a little... hm.]
Everything is truly all right with you, isn't it? [maybe it's the trial just making Yusuke feel paranoid, who knows]
no subject
And you're alright, considering?
no subject
[he gestures to the dragon and duel disk] I must thank you, for showing me this. It has been a privilege.

[ hesitates, then ]
This card and this project is very personal to me. So I'm glad I could share it with you. If there's anything else you want to know...or if there's something I can help you with, I hope you'll feel open to ask.

[ he shifts, then ]
Did I tell you about my brother and I coming to live with Gozaburo Kaiba?
[ he honestly doesn't remember with everything that's happened ]

After our parents died, their family frittered away our inheritance while we got sent to an orphanage. When a rich businessman visited the orphanage as a photo op, I convinced him to make us his heirs. That was Gozaburo Kaiba. Gozaburo was strict. He didn't like us to waste much time together. He...didn't like a lot of things, including games, said they were a waste of time and money.
One day my brother sneaked an envelope with some Duel Monsters cards into my textbooks--basically trash, with a mock Blue-Eyes White Dragon card he'd drawn himself to cheer me up. We both got in big trouble when Gozaburo found out. But from then on, I knew that if I could hold out and finally get the real thing, I'd be able to do anything. And eventually, I tracked them all down.

That anger softens a little, though, at the rest of his explanation... It's a poignant story.]
I see... So the dragon symbolises many things to you. Defiance, determination, hope, the love and support of your brother... I can see now why there was so much care put into the card.
no subject
Right. A lot of things are easier now. But it never hurts to have something to remind you of strength, and surviving. You've got to have something like that too, right, Kitagawa?
no subject
[In that way, maybe it wasn't so different from the card drawn by his little brother, as far as sentiment goes.]
But I doubt I could have ever have been strong enough to grasp the truth without this. [he pats the kitsune mask hanging from his belt] So long as I have it, I can never lose sight of my resolve to fight.
no subject
[ Something painted with a mother's love... Kaiba can barely imagine it, but what he can conceive of is warm ]
What's the story behind the mask, if you don't mind my asking?
no subject
[As for the mask...]
Do you recall I mentioned a group named the Phantom Thieves stole Madarame's heart, and gave me my freedom? I wasn't just saved by them... I actually joined their number, and fought him myself. This mask is what I gained from that decision-- the manifestation of my resolve to rebel.

[ Kaiba's fists clench reflexively; it's one thing for someone to reject family ties--he himself will never, ever make peace with the aunts and cousins who had only taken them in for as long as they brought a paycheck. But for your bonds to be forcibly erased when you're too young to protest or even realize...? It's probably not the ideal time to get angry about this thing he can't change, but still ]
I...feel like I'm missing a few pieces about your phantom group. It's like there's something that doesn't follow...
no subject
I stole the true painting back from Madarame's Palace, and in doing so, changed his heart. A pity most of the world will never see its true form, because they'll simply think of it as another forgery... but for me, it is enough.
[Leblanc and its customers get to enjoy its beautiful presence every day, and that makes Yusuke happier than any worldwide recognition of his mother's work could.]
What pieces do you mean? I realise now I have nothing to hide in this Shibuya, so I can tell you anything you'd like to know.
no subject
(Is this human empathy? That stuff's actually real!?)
He frowns over at Yusuke with something he's having trouble identifying as anything other than concern ]
...You've really been able to find peace? Even knowing you were able to take him down, I would still be furious about it...
And no wonder you were so upset about Kurusu hiding so much from you.
no subject
[He looks down at his hands, frowning.]
Suddenly, I was aware of impulses like wanting to paint for recognition, or to make money, and it terrified me that my need for both things might turn into selfish desires like his. I had artist's block for many months, and at one point, considered whether I should give up on art altogether... but Akira was always there, to encourage and support me.
[Really, he relied upon him for so much, it made it that much harder when he'd suddenly had that support wrenched away -- to say nothing of the lies Akira was forced to maintain. Perhaps that was even more painful than having his entry fee itself stripped away from him.]
no subject
[ he looks down to his hands as well, then looks away ]
Were you able to work through the block? Or did you end up here, first?
no subject
The work was "Desire and Hope"... It depicted the duality of the deep darkness and the shining light that exists in the hearts of humanity.
